Grade Math and Resource - Weekly Newsletters

Math Resource Newsletter

Dear Parents,

I am very excited to begin my third year as Math Resource teacher, and my ninth year teaching at St. Dorothy School.  Prior to teaching at St. Dorothy, I was an elementary school teacher for eight years in the public school system.  I hold a Professional Clear California Teaching Credential with a supplementary authorization in mathematics.  I am a graduate of St. Lucy’s High School in Glendora and have a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA.  I look forward to a positive school year, and being part of your child’s education.

As part of the Math Resource class, your child will cover the same curriculum as the larger math classroom but in a small group environment.  This allows students to receive more one to one instruction time.

Sincerely,

Elaine Measer

Texts

The students in grades 4-6 will use the Saxon Math series.  Its unique incremental development covers all basic mathematical concepts and skills.  The 7th & 8th grade texts are Mathematical Connections – A Bridge to Algebra and Geometry and Algebra Structure and Method Book 1.

Homework and Grading Policies

Homework will be assigned at every class meeting.  Class time will be given to begin assignments, and homework will be kept in a separate math notebook.  The students work habits grade will be based on the successful completion of all homework assignments, productive use of class time, and bringing all the necessary supplies to class each day.  Daily math drills will be given.  These math drills will not influence the trimester grade, but will help indicate areas of strength and weakness.  Tests and quizzes will be averaged for the trimester grade.

Communication

Tests will be graded and returned to the student within two days of the exam.  All tests and quizzes must be reviewed, signed by a parent, and returned the next day.  Problems missed on a test or quiz must be corrected on a separate sheet of paper and turned in with the signed test.  A folder with student work will be sent home for review at the end of each month.  Please feel free to send a note or call the office to speak with me at any time.  If you leave a message, I will return your call as quickly as possible.
