Curriculum and Instruction

St. Dorothy School educates students from Kindergarten through eighth grade in all required academic skills. A highly qualified, professional Principal, faculty, and supporting staff provide a Christian environment in which the curriculum emphasizes moral and spiritual values of the Catholic Church within the global community. These are strengths of St. Dorothy School.

The curriculum adheres to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Department of Catholic Schools, California State Department of Education, and the National Standards. All teachers follow the Department of Catholic Schools weekly time allotments. The curricular programs include Religion (Family Life and Good Touch Bad Touch); Language Arts (Reading, Literature, Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Core Literature); Math (Pre-Algebra and Algebra I); Social Studies; Science (Health); Physical Education; Art; Music; and Computer Literacy. Our curricular program strives to integrate St. Dorothy Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs) into all areas of learning.

St. Dorothy School strengthens Catholic Identity through a variety of teaching methods and learning activities. Students experience many opportunities to celebrate Catholic traditions; all grade levels attend weekly Mass and have the opportunity to participate in the planning and celebration of the Liturgy. When possible, the class that is involved in planning the week’s Mass meets with a Deacon or Priest to discuss and interpret the scripture readings. Students look up weekly Mass readings in their Bibles and take their Bibles to Mass. The students also participate in Sacraments, Benedictions, Stations of the Cross, and Church holidays and seasonal celebrations, such as Lent, Advent, Easter, Christmas, and All Saints Day. Each day St. Dorothy School begins and ends with a school wide prayer, led by the Student Council over the intercom and phone systems. In addition, each class prays before lunch and for special intentions.

Sacred spaces are visible in each classroom to remind students of their faith life. At the beginning of each week, the whole school gathers for flag salute. At this gathering, either the Student Council or students from grades two through eight alternate reading the weekly gospel. During the school week, the teachers discuss the weekly Gospel message in the classrooms to encourage the students to live out the message of the Gospel. Our Prayer Partner Program allows older students to model Christian behavior to younger students. Catholic Identity is an area of strength at St. Dorothy School.
